fajna stronka, wywiady z Mino (very niedlugo w PL ) i Montanha Silva (ponizej)

Montanha Silva
By Arnaldo Bechara

After The Beast Bob Sapp, with his 2 meters and 171 kilos, the fight world got shocked with another giant, bigger than the american. He´s from Brazil and his name is Montanha Silva. With amazing 2,20m and 180 kilos, he was the new sensation of MMA world. Montanha, 26 years old, had his debut in June 29th K-1 GP (Yokohama), against the japanese K-1 champion Musashi. Besides being disqualified after punch Musashi on the ground, what is prohibited in K-1 rules, Silva has a K-1 two years contract and will debut in MMA in September.

How long have you been fighting?

I did Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when I was a teenager in the brazilian Middlewest city of Cuiabá. As I was growing a lot, I needed to play something and I choose fighting, because I always love the Martial Arts. Later, I did Basketball due my friends callings. They said that I had everything to be good in it.

Is it true that you played Basketball as a professional?

Yes, it's true. I began in Basketball at 18 and I played during three years at ABB Florianópolis, in south of Brazil. In 1999, I went to São Paulo to play at Hebraica, but I injured my knee and the doctor said it would be better not to do the surgery and stay two years out of the courts. But in Brazil nobody gives a shit to the sportsmen and with me it wouldn't be different. I didn't have any support from my team, I went to work as a bodyguard and I dropped the Basketball.

How did you go to work in the "Gigantes do Ringue" (Ring Giants) tv show, from the brazilian tv CNT?

I saw a guy on a tv show announcing that they were recruiting athletes 1,80m taller, who knew some Pro-Wrestling technique and had some agility. I wasn't working at these days, a friend encourage me to go there and when I went to the job interview, Michel (a brazilian tv actor) was astonished with my weight and height numbers. I did some agility and strength tests and they called me. A month later I was debuting in the show and I stayed there till meeting Sergio Batarelli (brazilian K-1 representative).

How was your first contact with Batarelli?

A Batarelli's friend played Basketball with me. He said that I could fight MMA in Japan and he would introduce me to a friend that could help me. Batarelli introduced himself and said that had a lot of influence in Japan and that could close a deal with K-1 to fight. He was very impressive with my agility, in spite of my 2,20m. Since then, I started to practice and he made a two years deal with K-1.

You were disqualified in your first K-1 fight. Why did you punch your opponent on the ground?

Musashi is a K-1 nine year fighter, has a lot of experience, I wanted to show my braveness and that I wasn't afraid to fight him. During that time, I got confuse with the rules, changed the K-1 rules with one from MMA, took the guy down and I started to punish him. I'm not stupid, I just wanted to do a good job, because I was representing my country. But, after the fight, I went to Musashi and the K-1 people and apologyzed myself

How did japanese people treats you?

Oh, they treated me well. In Japan I'm known as an athlete, what would be very difficult to happen in Brazil. I even thought that they could be upset with me after my K-1 debut, but they understood. In Japan, as happens in other countries, they inspires themselves in their idols. They did a videoclip with Bob Sapp and myself comparing our handsizes. When they saw me at the streets, they stopped to do the same thing and to take pictures. That's all new to me and it seems like a dream that I don't wanna wake up.

When do you come back to the Japan rings?

My next fight will be in a K-1 MMA show in September. Now I know how it is the sport in Japan, that I can't take my opponent down and punch or submit him as in MMA.

What are you doing to get prepared to the September show?

I arrived at July 8th and I'm recovering myself from the trip, but next week I start to train Muay Thai with Roney Alex and on the ground, with someone not chosen yet. Probably I'll be two months in Los Angeles because here in Brazil there aren't sparrings for me due my size.
