And for the first time, the UFC will be staging arena events which are not intended to air in the US market. The television product will be offered for sale to US networks - any of them, not just FOX - but it is being created entirely with the domestic market in mind.
“I’ve been talking to Dana and Lorenzo for a long time now about the growth of UFC globally - it needs to be more local. Let me explain that: we are an American product which has won hearts and minds around the globe, but ironically most of what we do is built for US television,” Cook tells Fighters Only.
“The objective of our exercise is to give our European networks product during their prime time. So what we plan to do is we have created a UFC Fight Night series, a minimum of six events next year, but ideally that product is not for American television. Unless they choose to take it.”
Cook says the purpose of the localized product is to give each territory a chance to watch events at times convenient to them. At present in the UK, for example, fans are required to stay awake all night as events air in a slot typically running from 3am to 6am.
We can change many things in the world, the UFC has done a great job of changing the sports landscape, but the one thing we are struggling with is time zones. We’ve not been able to make a difference there - apparently they are etched in stone and will be with us for the rest of our lives,” Cook jokes.
