Period 1 - Henrik Larsson (Sweden 5-0 Bulgaria)
Already ahead through Ljungberg's first-half opener, it seemed almost inevitable that Larsson, who came out of international retirement to strengthen the Swedish attack, would get himself on the scoresheet. He did so in truly spectacular fashion. Erik Edman sent over a pinpoint left-wing cross and the prolific Larsson steered home a spectacular diving header, doubling Sweden's lead. Only a striker of Larsson's athleticism could have taken the opportunity with such style.
Period 2 - Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden 1-1 Italy)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an unfathomable striker at the best of times. So, when he scored a certain contender for Hyundai Goal of the Tournament, even his team-mates were not sure if he had intended to score. The replay shows, however, that the enigmatic Swede knew exactly what he was doing. Italy failed to clear the corner and the ball was hooked back into the danger area before the AFC Ajax striker showed fantastic skill by spinning in the air and flicking the ball with the outside of his boot over Christian Vieri and into the back of the net.
Period 3 - Jon Dahl Tomasson (Denmark 2-2 Sweden)
If Denmark were going to score against Sweden, there was only going to be one man who was going to do the damage - Jon Dahl Tomasson.. True to form Tomasson set the Danes on their way to qualification with a glorious strike in the 27th minute. The AC Milan striker chested down a lay-off from Ebbe Sand and, after spotting Isaksson off his line, struck a sublime dipping volley into the top right corner from 30 metres. It was the goal of a true opportunist and secured Denmark’s place in the quarter final.
Period 4 - Maniche (Portugal 2-1 Netherlands)
So good it did not just catch out Edwin van der Sar, but also the TV director. Cristiano Ronaldo, who put Portugal 1-0 up, tapped a 58th-minute corner to Maniche. The midfield player took the ball to the edge of the Dutch area and let fly a looping shot that curled and dipped past a stunned Van der Sar. It was such a shock that the live TV pictures only showed the ball entering the net. Replays confirmed what those watching in the Estádio José Alvalade already knew - it was a moment of genius.
