Rickson vs Hugo: round 2
By José Maurício Costa
When TATAME launched in last December told the history of rivalry between Luta-Livre and Jiu-Jitsu, showing also the top of the confront: Desafio de Vale-Tudo, in 1991, in Grajaú (RJ), we had information that somebody had taken pictures the fight between Hugo Duarte and Rickson Gracie at public school Padre Antônio Vieira's patio, where still today is located Gracie Academy. We've tried, but we did not get those pictures in time to publish over the report Jiu-Jitsu vs Luta Livre. But we did not give it up. We kept investigating until fate gave us a little help and we met businessman Luiz Carlos Prado Junior, 41 years old.
By that time, Luiz was only 24 and was Hugo Duarte's pupil. When he knew Luta-Livre would invade Gracie Academy, he though about buying a camera to register the invasion. It was an amateur camera and so the photographer. But it's the unique image register of confront that only lived in minds of people who was there. Now you will be able to hear a testimony of the person who had a camera in that moment.
I was pupil of Hugo and used to train at La Maison, Lagoa (Rio de Janeiro). I was out of the academy almost a month, when they came to my house and recruit me. They wanted to gather together all Luta-Livre fighters to invade Gracie Academy, in Humaitá. On the day of the fight, we got together at Clube Boqueirão, in Rio's downtown, in late afternoon. From there we all went to Cobal's park, located in front of Gracie Humaitá's headquarter. It was a lot of people. It was around 200 guys divided in many cars, motorbikes and even bikes. Rickson had surprised Hugo at Pepê Beach. That was something really awful and Luta-Livre's crew wanted to payback.
