ABU DHABI — The second Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the Emirates Cup here at the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation auditorium on December 16 is set to draw double the number of entries from last year´s inaugural event, according to the event manager and Emirates´ head coach Carlos Santos.

The championship under the patronage of Abu Dhabi´s Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for a total purse of Dh44,000 is set to draw entries from all over the Middle East, Europe and the U.S.

“We had 80 entries for the inaugural event. I expect this year´s competition to draw double this number as we have made more contacts from the outside world besides a sharp increase in training of our own team," said Santos.

“This year´s competition will be worked off in a knock out basis because of time constraints and would include seven weight categories including the open contest," added the burly Brazilian two times world champion.

Santos said the early announcement gives the prospective entries enough time to prepare for the championship that will include weight categories 65kgs and under, 73kgs, 81kgs, 89kgs, 97kgs, 97 and over, and the open division. A women´s competition will be staged if the organizers receive sufficient entries.

Santos stressed the sport has received support from General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Shaikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Shaikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation president Mohammed bin Taloob Al Derai.

“Now the training is open for both nationals and expatriates here at the federation´s auditorium. Jiu Jitsu is not all brawn and no brain, it´s a thinking game," added the Brazilian, who also represents the world´s governing body for the sport as a development officer in the region.

“The sport has grown in the emirates so much during the last two years now we are in the process of flying down two more instructors from Brazil," said Santos, who oversees training both in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Santos is also heading the formation of a UAE Association for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. “It´s a matter of time as we have already completed the main process before putting it across to the ruling body for the sport for their perusal."
