I’m a Marine currently stationed in Kuwait. I have a white belt with black tip in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). I took second place in the white belt masters’ division in the Dale Earnhart Jr BJJ tournament in NC in January of this year. My coach told me I’m a few months away from being awarded my blue belt. That has been postponed because of my deployment but I don’t plan to lose much, if any, of my proficiency in BJJ.
I’m currently training on a hard wooden floor covered by two layers of canvas. I train with other Marines by teaching fundamental techniques like the scissor sweep, the guard, mount, back mount, across side, rear naked choke, straight arm bar etc.
I also get some mat time in by grappling wrestlers and Marines that are bigger and stronger than me (I’m 5’11 185 lbs with 10% body fat). I’m also 38 years old.
Could you please send me some of your past articles of “Mat Time?" I find your articles highly informative. I definitely feel that I have a better understanding and greater appreciation of BJJ after reading “Mat Time".
I’m training nearly every night for about 90 minutes.
The magazine “Grappling" is not sold in Kuwait and I have a difficult time getting a hold of your articles. Internet use is currently prohibited. Anything you can send to me via my email address would be greatly appreciated.
I even have Jiu Jitsu tattooed on my left arm. Believe me when I say BJJ is a way of life for me.
Later tonight, I’m going to “hit the mats (canvas)."
Sincerely,
