Sambo wrestling is a composite style of jacket wrestling originally developed in Russia to serve as a common form of sport wrestling for the fifteen different republics of the former Soviet Union, each of which had one or more of its own distinct styles of folk wrestling, with widely varying rules. It was also used as a form of hand-to-hand combat preparation and training by Soviet military for use in unarmed combat. Sambo today is practiced in two flavors: Sport Sambo, the third style of international wrestling and a globally popular form of submission grappling; and Combat Sambo, a method of self-defense training.

The term SAMBO is an acronym for the Russian phrase "SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya" or in English language, "Self-defense Without Weapons." Until the official adoption of the term "SAMBO" the sport had also been referred to as SAM, and then later SAMOZ. The correct, official Internationally recognized English transliterated spelling is SAMBO.

Sambo originated in the former Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.). It is considered to have been born on November 16, 1938, the date it was officially accepted as a sport by the National Committee of Physical Culture of the USSR. The roots of Sambo go back to ancient times, however, with techniques drawn from the many folk styles of wrestling that existed in the fifteen republics of the former Soviet Union. Sambo was further developed by the Soviet military and extensively taught as a form of hand to hand combat for soldiers.

The International Amateur Wrestling Federation (FILA) first recognized Sambo as a sport of world stature in 1966 at the FILA Congress in Toledo, Ohio USA and adopted it alongside freestyle and Greco - Roman wrestling as the third international wrestling discipline. The first World Sambo Championship were held in Teheran, Iran in 1973, in conjunction with the FILA World Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships. Subsequent world championships were held in 1974 and 1975, then annually beginning in 1979. World Cup Team championships began in 1977 and have taken place periodically to date.

In 1984 Sambo separated from FILA and the International Amateur Sambo Federation (FIAS) was formed. At the organizational Congress in Bilbao, Spain Fernando Compte of Spain was elected the first president. Josh Henson of the United States was elected Vice-President and later became the second president of FIAS.

In 1985 FIAS was accepted into the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), and Sambo competition was included in the World Games for the first time in London, England 1985.

In 1991, a rival international Sambo federation was formed by Etienne Labrousse, former Secretary General of FIAS, called Federation Mondiale de Sambo (FMS). FMS consisted primarily of various soviet republics which could not be recognized by FIAS, which recognized the Soviet Union. FMS held separate world championships each year until it finally disbanded in 1997.

President. Compte retired in 1991 and Mr. Henson assumed the presidency until the next elections in 1992, at which time he was elected as Compte's successor.

In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved and FIAS recognized Russia as the successor to the Soviet Union. Other Soviet republics that had been part of FMS were invited to join.

In 1993, FMS asked for recognition by GAISF in place of FIAS and was denied.

Later in 1993, a third international Sambo federation was formed, consisting largely of former Soviet States that had not previously been members of FIAS. That group also chose to use the name FIAS and claimed to be the controlling international federation, but that claim was rejected by the presidents of FMS and FIAS alike. Former FIAS Secretary General Tomoyuki Horimai of Japan was elected president of the new group (FIAS East).

In 1994, FMS signed an accord to unite original FIAS (FIAS West), under Josh Henson of the USA) and the two held joint championships for three years. In 1997, FMS was dissolved and some of the former FMS countries broke away to join the alternative FIAS (FIAS East). Thus in 1999, the split in Sambo continued in a different way, with two organizations claiming the same name. Discussion to unify the two FIAS groups began in 1999.

1920 Sambo begins to take form as a separate sport, based on work by Vasily Oschchepkov, Victor Spriridonov and Anatoly Kharlampief.

1938 Sambo officially recognized as a sport in the Soviet Union on 16 November

1939 First National Championships in the Soviet Union, with participants from 8 Soviet republics, Moscow and Leningrad.

1966 Sambo accepted as the third discipline of international wrestling by FILA, the International Amateur Wrestling Federation.

1967 First international Sambo championships held in Riga USSR with athletes from Bulgaria, Mongolia, Yugoslavia and the USSR.

1971 Sambo included in the national Spartakiade multi-sport games of the USSR.

1972 First European Championships held in Riga 20-27 November.

1972 Herbert Jacob of Great Britain named first head of FILA Sambo Commission.

1973 First World Sambo Championships (individual event) held in Teheran, Iran.

1975 First National championships outside the Soviet Union held in USA

1977 First Pan American championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

1977 Fernando Compte of Spain named new head of FILA Sambo Commission and changes it to the FILA World Committee of Sambo Wresting.

1977 First World Cup of Sambo (team event) held in Tenerife, Spain

1979 FILA begins annual world championships in Sambo and includes First youth event (ages 17-20).

1981 First World Championships for Women are held in Spain.

1981 Sambo included in Bolivarian Games in South America.

1982 Sambo included in the Cruz del Sur Games of South America, in Rosario, Argentina.

1983 Sambo Included in AAU Junior Olympic Games in the Untied States

1983 Sambo included in the Pan American Games

1984 Sambo included in Happoel Games of Israel.

1984 Sambo separates from FILA at Johnkoping, Sweden Congress.

1984 FIAS is founded on 13 June 1984 in Bilbao, Spain. Fernando compete of Spain is Elected President. Josh Henson of the United States is elected Vice-president. Etienne Labrousse of France is elected Secretary General.

1985 FIAS accepted into membership in GAISF on 21 October 1985.

1985 Sambo Included in the IWGA World Games in London, England.

1986 First World Cup in Asia held in Tokyo, Japan.

1987 First World Cup in Africa held in Casablanca, Morocco.

1989 First World Cadet (15-16) championships in West orange, new Jersey USA.

1990 First World Cup in South America held in Caracas, Venezuela

1991 FMS formed, primarily with Soviet republics not allowed to be members of FIAS, which recognizes the Soviet Union. Etienne Labrousse of France elected president.

1991 Soviet Union is dissolved. Soviet heavyweight Sambo champion crowned on December 31 at 1991 World Sambo Championships in Montreal, Canada becomes the last Soviet world champion in any sport.

1991 Fernando Compte retires as president. Vice-president Josh Henson assumes duties of FIAS President.

1992 Josh Henson of the USA is elected second FIAS president. Tomoyuki Horimai of Japan elected Secretary General.

1992 First Asian Championships.

1992 First World Schoolboy (13-14) Championships in Herne Bay, England.

1993 Sambo included as a demonstration event sport in the cultural festival of the World University Games.

1993 A third International Sambo Federation forms, primarily with eastern block nations formerly with FMS. New Group (FIAS East) uses name FIAS and elects Tomoyuki Horimai of Japan as president. Most western countries remain with original FIAS (FIAS West) under Josh Henson of the USA.

1994 FMS and FIAS (FIAS West) sign agreement to cooperate.

1997 FMS officially disbands and members divide between FIAS (FIAS West) and (FIAS East).

1997 (FIAS East) elects Mikhail Tikhomirov new president.

1998 Sambo included in World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia.

1999 The FIAS (FIAS West) and (FIAS East) Presidents meet in Gion, Spain to discuss unification
